STAAR testing results in for 5th and 8th grade students

(KLTV) - The Texas Education Agency has released the numbers for the amount of fifth and eighth graders who passed their first attempt at the STAAR test.

According to those numbers, almost 80 percent of fifth and eighth graders passed the mathematics portion of the test. More than 75 percent passed the STAAR reading assessment.

The initial 2013-2014 mathematics passing rates show a small improvement from 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.

Mathematics


Grade 5:
  • 2013-2014: 79%
  • 2012-2013: 75%
  • 2011-2012: 77%

Grade 8:

  • 2013-2014: 79%
  • 2012-2013: 77%
  • 2011-2012: 76%

The 2013-2014 reading passing rate for fifth grade went down 1 percent from 2012-2013. The eighth grade passing rate dropped 2 percent from 2013.

Reading

Grade 5:

  • 2013-2014: 76%
  • 2012-2013: 77%
  • 2011-2012: 77%

Grade 8:

  • 2013-2014: 82%
  • 2012-2013: 84%
  • 2011-2012: 80%

Under state law, Texas students in grade 5 and 8 must pass the STAAR reading and math tests in order to be promoted to the next grade level. The students will take the test again in May.
