Several new stores have committed to moving in to the new shopping center currently under construction in Tyler. That mall will be located between Academy Sports and Gander Mountain off of Broadway Avenue near toll 49. The Village at Cumberland Park is set to open in just a few months.

The mall is taking shape. Developers said construction is on schedule despite bad weather putting a damper on things over the past few months. Tom Mullins with the City of Tyler said big things are under way.

“This is the largest retail development currently underway in the whole state of Texas,” Mullins said.

Developers said they hope to begin opening some stores and restaurants in September. That’s exactly one year after the groundbreaking.

“They’ll be some service and some boutique and some office and maybe even some residential as part of the development too, but it’s a massive project,” Mullins explained.

Though a few stores will be familiar faces, like Bed Bath and Beyond and Ross, their old spaced have already been filled.

“You know, three or four currently already in the market are leaving where they are now and moving to that new space, and the primary reason they’re moving is because they needed more space,” he said.

Old Navy, Maurice’s, Sketchers, and Compass Trading Company all recently signed on to claim their spot at the new shopping center. Mullins said this is good news for Tyler.

“We’ll attract new dollars coming in and we’ll retain dollars that had been leaking out,” he said.

At 695,000 square feet, the new mall will be 100,000 square feet bigger than Tyler’s current mall.

By the grand opening in the fall of 2015 developers hope to have 100 percent occupancy.

Until then there will be a lot of construction.

“You’re also going to see construction activity on Broadway,” Mullins assures, because new entrances must be built and roadways rerouted.

“So there’s going to be a lot of activity for a while in that part of town,” Mullins said.

But it's activity that will lead to future activity.

Many businesses are still under negotiation, but the developers said they have had no trouble getting national brands to come in.
