A line dancing session at an East Texas senior center came to an abrupt end when an SUV came crashing through the wall. It happened around 11:30 on Wednesday morning at the Senior Circle building on North Fourth St in Longview with seniors inside coming very close to being hit by flying debris.
Dozens of seniors were on the floor dancing when the walls began to shake.
"When we arrived on scene we discovered that a vehicle had driven through the building. Anytime a building is struck, there's the possibility of quite a bit of danger, especially when people are inside the building," said Longview police officer Debra Stiles.
Police say an elderly woman mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brakes and ran the white SUV into the building.
The front wall had full length mirrors front to back , and the impact sent shards of glass flying. Miraculously, none of the people inside the building were hit by any of it.
"When people hit the gas and they think they've hit the brake it takes that extra second, because they're thinking why is it not stopping? So it takes an extra second to realize before they take their foot off the gas," says Stiles.
No charges were filed against the driver.
The accident may have caused the center to suffer some structural damage. It will be closed until May 5 for inspection.
