VAN, TX (KLTV) -
An East Texas woman who has spent her entire life taking care of others needs your help to have open heart surgery.
Vista Santos, who works at a Lindale nursing home, was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm last Thursday. Santos does not have health insurance.
Now, her friends and family are pulling together to raise money for Santos' surgery.
"It's humbling to know how many people really care about somebody in need, and we're in need," says Wyatt Santos, Vista's youngest son.
Wyatt plays football for Van High School. His brother, Dalton, plays for UT Austin. They are a close-knit family, and couldn't believe Vista's bad news.
"My little brother called me and said, 'Mom is in the ER,' and I was shocked," says Dalton Santos, Vista's oldest son.
"The only thing I live for, and that I have in my life, is those three kids, and it just devastated me," Vista says.
Her friend immediately created a donation page and it didn't take long for Vista's sons to find it.
"I showed it to Dalton and he's like, 'Well let's get it out there, let's see what we can do with it,'" says Wyatt.
"He tweeted it; shortly after that, he Facebooked it, and within an hour it went from $85 to $1,500," Vista says.
That number doubled overnight and Vista says the messages that came with the donations made her cry. "Just some of the notes from friends, family, from acquaintances, from people I didn't know that followed him. It's overwhelming and it's emotional," she explained.
"All I want to do is help. I just want to give whatever I can to her and just say, 'Mom, I got you. I'm not going to let anything happen. I got you,'" says Dalton.
Vista says it's hard to have her sons and others caring for her, but as long as they've got each other, her heart is in the right hands.
Vista is set to visit her doctor again next week. Her son, Dalton, plans to come home from Austin to be with her for the surgery.
