Grabbing an ibuprofen after a tough workout to relieve soreness may not be the best idea. A new study indicates taking ibuprofen after working out could intensify side effects, such as intestinal bleeding, and other serious conditions.
Whether you are on the bench or working on your biceps, East Texas Baptist University football coaches believe a workout is supposed to leave you feeling sore.
"That lets you know you have done something to exert your body to get stronger and that's why you should workout," Lee Grimes said, the offensive line coach for the ETBU Tigers.
Marquis Bowling agrees.
"'Coach, I can't feel my legs. Coach, I’m fatigued.’ But that's part of the game, if it were easy, everybody would do it, “ added Bowling, defensive line for the Tigers.
A new report says relieving that pain with an ibuprofen could lead to severe health issues.
“Reabsorption of gluten causes general inflammation in the body. It does cause diabetes, asthma, and heart failure. Some believe it could be linked to Alzheimer's," said Dr. Charles Williams, an orthopedic specialist.
Popping an ibuprofen after a workout for some could be more dangerous than other. Williams says some people may not know they have sensitivity to gluten, which could cause even stronger side effects.
“It increases impermeability in the membranes in the intestine. It opens that up so more things can get in the bloodstream. When those products from gluten get in the bloodstream it causes a problem."
Plus, popping an ibuprofen doesn't deal with the root problem. Taking an anti-inflammatory masks the symptom but doesn't take care of the underlying problem, Dr. Williams said.
If you regularly have a headache after a workout, it could mean you have a more serious health issue and you should get it checked out by your family doctor.
