(KLTV) -

A stormy pattern may be returning to East Texas this week. Shower and thunderstorm chances look to increase across portions of East Texas on Monday afternoon.

A warm and unstable airmass is currently in place across portions of the area. During the day Monday, look for a mix of clouds and sunshine to develop across the area. The sunshine will help to warm the airmass as we progress through today. During this same time, the sunshine along with the warmer temperatures, will help to create an unstable airmass across East Texas.

A strong cold front currently draped across the plains, will dive south and east towards Texas during our Monday afternoon. Showers and storms should become more focused along this boundary during the afternoon hours and move toward East Texas late this afternoon and evening. Due to the warm and unstable airmass in the region, showers and storms could become strong to even severe. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined the northern half of East Texas under the gun for severe weather.

The main threats look to be damaging winds and large hail, although we can't rule out an isolated tornado or two, due to the instability levels. The main time frame looks to be between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. this afternoon and evening. Rainfall amounts look to average around one half inch or less. Higher amounts are possible under some of those stronger storms in localized areas.

We will see dry and warm weather moving back into the area through the middle of the week. Storm chances may increase once again toward the end of the work week into the weekend.
