BULLARD, TX (KLTV) -
For the first time since 2009, the Bullard softball team can call themselves district champions. The Lady Panthers wrapped up the District 16-3A title last night and are headed to the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
"It feels pretty good to know that this class and this team was able to pull off something that a lot of the other girls couldn't really do," junior catcher Srah ritch said. Senior center fielder Taylor Frederick added, "I think it really means alot to this community and to this school because it hasnt been done in so long.
So why was this team able to breakthrough and get back to the postseason? Well a strong work ethic and will to win is a good place to start.
The mentality was a lot different so watching them and seeing how much of a difference there was in playing last year and this year, we just wanted to go farther," sophomore first baseman Asleigh Gillard said.
Senior third baseman Hana Woyt added,"We are just really a close knit team and we always just find ways to get our hits together and field good and everything. It kind of just falls all together."
The glue that keeps it togethre is pitcher Coco Springer. She has over 200 strikeouts on the year and has an ERA of a whopping .40.
"Coco brings everything," Frederick said. "She brings the moon, she brings everything, Coco dominates." Woyt added,"She is always on top of her game. she is defintely our most valuable player I would say."
Being the star player, the Lady Panthers rely heavily on Springer, but Coco doesnt mind.
"I dont feel any pressure, I just want to go on the mound and get as many strikeouts as I can," Springer said.
The girls hope those k's are high as well but know come playoff time it will take a team effort to make a run at state.
" I feel like if we actually get our heads right and become more of a team than we already are I feel like we are going to go pretty far in the playoffs," Ritch said.
