Police searching for suspects who scammed elderly E. Texas man

Posted: Updated:
An elderly East Texas man was victimized twice in less than one month in his own home. Now, authorities are warning other residents to be on the lookout.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department said the man fell victim to two separate scams when he was approached by individuals at his home. The first scam occurred on March 17. The man told police that a white male between 30 and 40 years old knocked on his door and told him he saw a squirrel go into a hole on the man's room. The suspect told the victim he would patch the hole on the roof and not charge him any labor, only the cost of material.

The elderly victim agreed to the repair but did not ask for a price. He said he assumed it would only cost around $30 to $40. The victim said the suspect told him he would contact the the victim's insurance company and they would reimburse him for the cost of the repair. The suspect and three other white males were at the victim's home for around two hours.

The victim was given a bill for $2500 with an additional $800 in tax. The man told police the suspect wanted him to pay in cash. The victim said he was intimidated by the suspect and drove to his bank in order to withdraw the $3300.

The elderly man said the subject that approached him did all the talking while the other men stayed on the roof. The man said all the subjects appeared to be between 30 and 40 years old except for one man who looked to be around 25.

On April 8, the same victim reported that his home was burglarized. He told police that just after dark, a female suspect knocked on his door and said her dog just ran into his backyard. She asked the man if he would help her locate the dog. The man agreed and followed her into the backyard.

While in the backyard, the man said he heard a voice coming from his front yard. The female suspect told him it was her son and that her dog must have ran back to him since they had not located the dog in the backyard. The female quickly left the home on foot.

The man walked back inside his home and met with his disabled wife who told him a man came into their house and walked into the study. He soon found that money was stolen from his hom.

All residents in the surrounding area are asked to be on the lookout for these suspects. Anyone with information regarding either of these cases is asked to contact the Mount Pleasant Police Department at 903-575-4004.
