HALLSVILLE, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas man is dead after police say his girlfriend shot him twice in self defense.

Harrison County authorities received a call around 7:50 on Monday morning from a caller saying she shot her boyfriend. The caller told dispatchers she shot 51-year-old Marc Mathison twice at a residence in the 500 block of Appaloosa Lane in Hallsville and needed an ambulance and deputies.

Sheriff's department spokesman Jay Webb identified the woman as Carolyn Faye, a Hallsville resident. Webb added that the shooting appears to be in self-defense.

Webb said Mathison died from his injuries at Good Shepherd Medical Center at 9:15 a.m. on Monday.

Police say Mathison had been arrested on retaliation charges in October. He was also arrested in Gregg County during the same time period for aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

"Mr. Mathison is not a stranger to law enforcement. He has had issues in Gregg County and here. He was most recently arrested here for a retaliation charge. It stemmed from another event that happened in Kilgore," Harrison County Sheriff's spokesperson Jay Webb said.

Marc Mathison was scheduled to appear in court April 21 in Gregg County for the charge of aggravated assault and deadly contact. Mathison was charged in September 2012 with threatening and attempting to shoot at or in the direction of his girlfriend's son.

"The Kilgore Police Department put out an officer safety bulletin. Mr. Mathison had a history of confronting police officers. He would follow police officers from the station to their residence. He would find police and follow them," Webb said.

Mathison ran for mayor of Kilgore in 2013. He was beaten by Ronnie Spradlin 584-30.
