Smith Co. neighborhood battling multiple road closures after storms

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Sunday's downpour took a toll on some East Texas roadways. One of them, County Road 138 in Smith County, is currently closed for repairs.

County Road 138 is in Flint, just between Old Jacksonville Highway and Highway 69. The road closure is not the only one homeowners are now having to navigate around. The neighborhood is growing accustomed to "road closed" signs along their routes.

Now, one part of CR 138 is partially collapsed and a culvert needs repair.

"It fell on a water line, so all of us around in this area didn't have water for a little while," explains Nancy Ryal who lives nearby.

CR 137 has also been closed for months as a bridge is repaired. After Sunday's storms, homeowners learned they're facing more of the same problem now that CR 138 is closed too. Luckily, they have another way out of the neighborhood.

"The other road may go out and then we're stuck. We're going to have to make a ferry somewhere," jokes Ryal.
Ryal admits that the road closures are a bit of an inconvenience, but she and other neighbors are trying to look at the bright side.

"It has been very quiet and very nice not having cars zooming up and down this road, so we've been a bit spoiled that way. But it is a little bit of a pain to tack on a few extra miles just to get out and go to the store," says Beth Filla who also lives nearby.

Hopefully these residents won't have to tack on those extra miles for much longer. Monday afternoon, Smith County Road and Bridge workers were beginning to repair one of the community's three roads into town.

The county does not know how long County Road 138 is going to be closed. Once the culvert pipes come in, they say they'll have a better timeline.

Another road closure due to weather is in northern Smith County.  Monday, Barber Road, also known as County Road 3101, was closed, but county officials expect the road to re-open Tuesday.
