DPS: Driver, passenger smoking synthetic marijuana before fatal crash

Posted: Updated:
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A Tyler man is dead and another in the hospital after the car they were driving left the road and struck a tree on Friday night.

Trooper Jean Dark with the Department of Public Safety said Miguel Hernandez, 27, and Danny Betancourt, 19, were headed north on Highway 155 in Smith County when the 2003 Lincoln Towncar they were riding hit a tree. Dark said speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, which occurred about 13 miles south of Tyler at 1150 p.m. on Friday.

Betancourt also told DPS troopers that he and Hernandez had been smoking synthetic marijuana before the wreck.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Gary Alfred. Betancourt was taken to a Tyler hospital in serious condition.

Hernandez's body was taken to Lighthouse First Call Funeral Home in Tyler.
