Democrats Angry At Newspaper After Election Day Error

The furor hasn't died down over a mistake in Tuesday's Tyler Morning Telegraph newspaper that sent some voters to the wrong polling place.

Twenty-eight of 77 precincts in Smith County had the wrong location listed. Democrats cried foul, saying many of those precincts are in heavily Democratic areas.

Wednesday, the party's county chairperson, Karen Roberts, says the paper should have done more to correct the problem.

"I think we have to accept that the paper made an honest mistake, but they also made a conscious decision not to fix the problem. Instead, we had to find volunteers to leave their homes and their jobs to go to the precincts and redirect voters. I think the paper should have taken on that responsibility," Roberts said.

Democrats tried and failed to use a court injunction to keep polling places open late on Election Night.

Now, neither the party nor the Sandlin campaign say any challenge to the results due to the error is likely.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph blamed the mix up on a "computer error."
