Sandlin Congratulates Gohmert For Congressional Win

Last night in downtown Marshall, incumbent Democrat Max Sandlin gave a concession speech after vote counts showed he was consistently behind by a large margin.

The Sandlin campaign continues to blame Republican redistricting for the candidate's loss, although Sandlin lost in his home county of Harrison. He won only two of the 13 counties in District 1.

Sandlin did not congratulate his opponent, Republican Louie Gohmert, during the speech, but did when we interviewed him afterward.

"I want to take this opportunity to congratulate my opponent, throwing a good campaign, getting good numbers," Sandlin said. "He needs to be congratulated for that, for his efforts."

Even though he lost, Sandlin is still holding onto the hope that a special election will be called next year. That's because the U.S. Supreme Court has ordered a lower court to re-examine its decision to uphold the state's redistricting plan.

Regardless of what happens, Sandlin says he will run again in 2006, and his supporters last night said they would work for him again.
