Celebrity read-a-thon to celebrate literacy initiative

From the Literacy Council of Tyler:

TYLER, TX – Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Hiawatha, and perhaps a pirate or two will be joining local leaders as they spend a day at the park reading non-stop…sun up to sun down. Literacy Council of Tyler (LCOT) invites East Texas families to stop by to enjoy readings of their favorite childhood tales any time on Saturday, April 12.

What inspired the read-a-thon? The heart of LCOT’s mission is to change the lives of adults in East Texas through education, and in doing so impact their families and all the generations that follow.

“The concept of having local leaders read to families who will be enjoying the park that day is perfectly in line with the impact we want to have in our community,” said LCOT Board President, Kristen Seeber. “We were thrilled when one of our long-time supporters came up with the idea of celebrating our mission and new park with a read-a-thon. It’s a fun way to get the word out and invite community participation.”

In addition to the Celebrity Read-A-Thon, LCOT will be celebrating the opening of its new Legends for Literacy commemorative endowment park which is where the read-a-thon will take place. It is located along Rose Rudman Trail near the Southside Park playground and pavilion.

The Legends for Literacy celebration will start at 10am with words of thanks from LCOT Executive Director Nancy Crawford and a ribbon cutting with Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass in attendance.

Some of the Celebrity Readers you can expect to see throughout the day are Michael Lujan, Peaches Owen, Dr. John & Joyce Hudnall, Anissa Centers, Patty Steelman, Mechele Mills, Jerry Ashworth, Ginny Ragland, Beverly Collins, Ann Curry, Ken Sigman, Cathy Krafve, Traci Kenner, Mayor Barbara Bass.
