Pets Fur People holding rabies clinic next Saturday

From Pets Fur People:

SMITH COUNTY, TX - The Smith County rabies clinics normally scheduled in April for the public will not be scheduled this year. In an effort to help pet owners keep their pets protected from the threat of rabies, Pets Fur People will hold a rabies clinic open to the public Saturday, April 12th from 10 am until noon at their facility located on County Road 386 in Tyler. Cost will be $10 for dogs and cats and no reservation is required.

According to Veterinarian Dr. John Alexander of Bullard Veterinary Medical Center, its prime time to make sure your pet's rabies vaccination is up to date. These pets are exposed to humans and that's why it's so important to have your pets vaccinated against rabies because we have a lot of bats and skunks that carry it in the area," explained Alexander.

The state of Texas requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age. Additionally, when traveling with a dog or cat, have in your possession a rabies vaccination certificate that was signed by a veterinarian.

Although not required by law, it is recommended that livestock (especially those that have frequent contact with humans), domestic ferrets, and wolf-dog hybrids should be vaccinated against rabies. Again, check with your veterinarian about other available vaccines for these animals.

For an animal to be considered currently vaccinated against rabies, at least 30 days must have elapsed since the initial vaccination and not more than 12 or 36 months (depending on the vaccine used)* can have elapsed since the last vaccination.

* All dogs and cats must receive a second rabies vaccination within one year of receiving their first vaccination, regardless of the type of vaccine used or the age at which the animal was initially vaccinated.
