Representative Tommy Merritt Gets Out Vote For Bush

State Representative Tommy Merritt of Longview is trying to get voters to the polls at the last minute -- not for his campaign, but for President Bush's.

He's leading the Texas Strike Force Team for the President in the battle ground state of New Mexico. Merritt says every vote there is crucial because the President lost that state by 367 votes in the 2000 election.

Merritt is one of more than 1,000 volunteers from Texas who have fanned out to several swing states to "get out the vote."

"We are walking up to their door, knocking on their door, and saying, we understand you hadn't voted. Record doesn't show you vote," Merritt said. "Please go vote. And it'd be of importance to the President."

The Strike Force Team is also operating phone banks and holding rallies for President Bush.

Merritt helped the President's campaign in 2000 as well.
