SMITH COUNTY, TX - Starting today Smith County citizens can bring trash and bulky items to the Greenwood Farms Landfill for free. The Smith County Environmental Crimes Unit, Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Precinct Constables and Smith County Commissioners Court are working together to host the 2014 Smith County Wide Clean Up event March 31 – April 12.

During this two week period, vouchers will be available to the public that can be exchanged for one free visit to the Greenwood Farms Landfill. Smith County residents may dispose of three cubic yards of trash and bulky items per person (the approximate equivalent of a full-sized truck bed). Vouchers are available to pick up at all Justice of the Peace and Constable Precinct offices or at the Smith County Courthouse Annex starting March 24, but will not be accepted at the landfill until the event starts on March 31. There is a limit of one voucher per household and businesses may not participate in the voucher program.

The vouchers are valid Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and on Saturday 6:30 a.m. to noon. The vouchers are accompanied by a detailed list of items that Greenwood Farms Landfill; an Allied Waste Company will not accept. Directions and a map to the Greenwood Farms Landfill are also provided.

Smith County Environmental Crimes Officer Tommy Goodman credits the Greenwood Landfill for working with the County to make this annual event possible.

“Manager Zach Briscoe of Greenwood Farms provides this service to the County every year. We could not do this without their generosity,” Officer Goodman said.

Items not accepted during the County Wide Clean Up include: hazardous waste, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, gasoline, oils, paint, acid, batteries, asbestos, Freon, whole tires, refrigerators, freezers, televisions and computers.
