ANDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas man charged in the death of his two-year-old stepson has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

A jury deliberated for 9 hours Monday before finding Billy Wayne Hasel, of Palestine, guilty of capital murder. Hasel was arrested on three criminal charges in September 2012.

Around 4 a.m. on September 1, 2011, EMS were called to Hasel's residence after he reported two-year-old Deacon Jack Ellis Garay was having a seizure. Child Protective Services said Deacon's body showed signs of abuse and massive bleeding was found on his brain.

He was later transported from a Palestine hospital to Children's Hospital in Dallas, where he died on September 8, 2011.

"During the course of the investigation, it was determined right away that Mr. Hasel was present at the time that the child was injured, and after numerous interviews with different people, his name was always to the forefront," said Sergeant James Muniz of the Palestine Police Department. "Even though we looked at other people who were at the residence at the time, there was nothing to determine that anyone else was responsible for the child's injury."

Hasel was arrested and indicted in Deacon's death in September 2012.
