Symposium to highlight cardiology advances

From East Texas Medical Center:

Physicians from across East Texas will gather on Saturday, April 5 at Hollytree Country Club in Tyler for the 11th Annual Cardiology Symposium, hosted by the ETMC Cardiology Institute and Tyler Cardiovascular Consultants.

"This comprehensive update on advances in cardiac care is highly important for the primary care physicians of our region," noted Tad Tolleson, MD, managing partner and research director at Tyler Cardiovascular Consultants. "The family practice and internal medicine physicians are on the front lines of heart disease diagnosis and treatment. The symposium brings together the doctors, physician assistants and other health professionals with cardiology experts to discuss first-hand the newest cardiac research and innovations.”

More than 130 participants are expected at the event, which will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Key topics to be addressed include: common causes of sudden death in young athletes, treatment strategies and indications for patients with congestive heart failure and advances in treatment for resistant hypertension and risk stratification in patients post ACS/NSTEMI. The keynote speaker will be Robert Stoler, MD, from Baylor University Medical Center, who will discuss Pushing the Envelope: New Advances in Minimally Invasive Valve Treatment.

This educational activity is accredited by the Texas Medical Association and Texas Nurses Association to provide continuing medical education credits.

"From diagnosis through surgical and non-surgical interventions to cardiac rehabilitation, ETMC provides comprehensive heart care with a patient-centered team,” noted Dianne Adelfio, ETMC Tyler vice president over cardiac services. "We are so pleased to have the expertise of the physicians of Tyler Cardiovascular Consultants who provide the vision each year for the Spring Cardiology Symposium. It's all about getting regional healthcare providers together in the same room for an unmatched educational experience,” she noted.

Dr. Tolleson added that the annual symposium would not be possible without the support of partnering organizations. Cardiology-related companies who will be represented include: Medtronic, St. Jude Medical, Abbott Vascular and Bard Peripheral Vascular. Other exhibitors are Access Closure, AngioScore, Arbor Pharmaceuticals Inc., AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Boehringer Ingelheim, Boston Scientific Corporation, Cardiovascular Systems Inc., Cook Medical, Gilead Sciences and Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., Lilly USA, Otsuka, Pfizer, Spectranetics and Volcano Corp.

The ETMC Cardiovascular Institute opened as a heart hospital-within-a-hospital in 1993 as ETMC Tyler created a major facility addition which includes catheterization labs, additional testing, cardiovascular surgical suites and cardiac ICU. Cardiac services also extend to ETMC hospitals throughout East Texas through cardiac clinics and rehabilitation. Tyler Cardiovascular Consultants is a multi-physician group that has provided leadership in cardiology in East Texas for more than 25 years.
