Police warn residents about 'unpaid balance' scam

Posted: Updated:
GLADEWATER, TX (KLTV) - East Texas authorities are warning residents about an electricity bill scam.

The Gladewater Police Departments said they have received reports that an anonymous caller is contacting citizens posing as a representative of an electric company. The caller threatens to cut the consumer's power off unless an outstanding balance is paid.

The caller then asks for credit or debit card information in order to make the payment. Residents who have given out this information have had funds stolen and used for other purposes.

Police urge consumers to call their electricity provider to verify the status of their account before providing any type of personal or financial information.
