KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

A class at Kilgore College has found a way to give to the community while they learn. The Automotive Technology Program works on donated cars, and once a year, they completely overhaul a vehicle to give to a family in need.

The Kilgore College Automotive Technology Program is a two-year course that will turn you into a mechanic.

Brigida Romano is getting close to that goal, her Associate’s Degree and a new car! Well, the 2002 Buick should drive like new at least.

“We actually just have to finish a couple of minor repairs. We’re going to work on it today, then a little next week and then get it over to body shop and get it cleaned up. We want it to be in really nice condition, we want the people who get it to be happy they have it, and be proud of it. We don’t want to give someone a car that’s not in good running condition or is going to cost them anything in the near future,” Romano said.

Some work on the car is done during class if the repair corresponds with studies, like the transmission did. But where do the parts come from?

“A lot of the parts are donated by ABC. We love them. They help us every year. They’re going to be out at the car show talking to people,” Romano revealed.

“They’ve done a really good job of being there for us and helping us out with parts. O’Reilly’s in Kilgore has also really helped us out a lot,” Romano stated.

You can help the class by entering the car show, which will provide money to the class so they can supplement donations. It will also go towards helping them learn the tools of the trade so they can fix a car to give to people in need.

If you attend the Kilgore College Car Show you may also get to see the fixed project car and the people who will own it.

The show is Saturday April 12 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Kilgore’s city park. Admission is free. It only costs $15 to enter your car in the show.

If you register at their Facebook page it’ll only cost $10 when you get to the show.

All proceeds are for the Automotive Technology class.
