'Healing our Heroes Project' hosts military family retreat in Trinity

TRINITY, TX (KTRE) -

A non-profit out of Austin is providing military families with all-expense-paid retreats has chosen East Texas as the perfect get-away.

Tucked away in Trinity is YMCA's "Camp Cullen: and where the "Healing Our Heroes Project" is bringing military families to reconnect and leave the stressors of everyday life behind at least for a while.

The Healing Our Heroes Project was born after LaTronda Humphries and her husband Prince Humphries, a veteran, went to a similar retreat and it changed their lives.

"We facilitate 5 day, 4 night retreats for military families," said Humphries."It's just a time for them to connect with their family."

Humphries says there are more than 1,600 families on their waiting list to take these vacations without having to worry about the expenses or anything else but having fun and bonding with their family.

"They have served our country and they deserve to have this time," said Humphries. "This is our thank you for them serving our country."

But in addition to zip lining, horse back riding, fishing and canoeing, there are classes that help build stronger marriages.

"The healthy marriage class was very educational," said Eric and Corie Grigo of Tucson, AZ.

Eric is retired from the military and he and his wife came for some TLC.

"I don't really have anything to stress out about but myself and I know even now and again I need a vacation," said Eric.

Lance Ziebell, a U.S. Army veteran, his wife, 3-year-old son and his service dog, Joker, wouldn't have made the time for a trip like this if it wasn't for HOH project.

"With programs like this getting to reconnect with other military families and actually having something in common with someone is really nice," said Alicia Ziebell.

The couple said it's nice to go somewhere with people who know what you're going through and not have to answer any questions.

"I can talk to one of these guys and girls in here and we can talk about anything else because we don't have to talk about the bad stuff because we already know so we can skip right by that," said Lance. "That's the hardest thing when someone goes oh tell me what happened over there. No, you just don't want to because it's more pain to talk about it. I just want to talk about the weather and stuff like that. I don't want to talk about war."

HOH Project is a non-profit organization that relies on donations/sponsorships and support from the community. They do not receive state or government assistance.
