Former Gamecock to coach girls varsity team at Lexington

LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) -

The girls varsity basketball team at Lexington High School has a new head coach, the school announced Friday.

Former Gamecocks player and school counselor Courtney Newton will lead the Wildcats next season.

"So excited to join the LHS Wildcats athletics department family!," Newton tweeted Friday. "Ready to get to work on building something special."

Newton played basketball at USC under Head Coach Dawn Staley and was a captain of the 2011-12 team that made it to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

She owns a share of the school record for three-point field goal percentage in a game hitting all five of her attempt against Georgia on Jan. 27, 2007 and logged 52 starts in her career.

Newton, a school counselor at Lexington High,earned her bachelor's degree in experimental psychology and her educational specialist degree in counselor education from the University of South Carolina.

    After falling to Longview in the Tyler 7-on-7 state qualifier, the Marshall Mavericks had one last chance this weekend in Rowlett. The Mavs got through Killeen Ellison, Waxahachie, and Arlington Bowie in pool play in order to advance to the tournament semifinals. There Marshall had to beat Texas High for a berth to College Station.
