Freedom Fighters: Joe Hogue

Posted: Updated:
OVERTON, TX (KLTV) -
Joe Hogue joined the Navy in September of 1942.  He had tried to join two years earlier, along with his best friend.  That friend's body is still on the submerged Arizona Battleship, sunk in the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Hogue would have been with him if his parents hadn't refused to sign the necessary papers for their teenage son.

Hogue became a tail gunner on a navy Air Corps patrol bomber, flying 44 combat missions and earning eight Air Medals and two Distinguished Flying Crosses.
