Small Town Hits It Big With Mention On Oprah

An East Texas town hits the big time with a mention on one of daytime TV's hottest shows.

Residents of Golden will be the first to tell you, most people don't even know where their town is located.  For the record, Golden is a small community located about 35 miles North of Tyler on U.S. 69.

The town only has 150 residents, but this past week they became nationally known with a mention on the Oprah Winfrey show.  Oprah named Golden's famous sweet potatoes as one of her "Favorite Foods".  Since then, phones in Golden have been ringing off the hook.

"As soon as the show aired I started getting calls from people in California, Oregon, New Jersey everywhere," said Golden Grocery employee Katie Rumfelt.

Golden Grocery serves as sort of the centerpiece of the town.  Owner Donna Hobbs said the mention fo the town was a surprise.

"We got a call (the morning the show aired) from Chicago, that's the only way we knew it was on that afternoon so we could watch it," she said.  "I called my mother, my brother, my sister and told them to watch... I even called my kids in college."

Patricia Patrick has lived in Golden for 11 years.  She said the publicity has been good for the town.

"My husband was working so I had to tape it for him," she said.  "There are a lot of people that live in East Texas that have never even heard of Golden so this kind of gives us a place."

Those who live in this small community said they don't mind the attention, but won't share their sweet potatoes with just anybody.

" 'So would you like to be on Oprah again?' Sure, sure.. just don't send Dr. Phil," said Hobbs.

If you're wondering why "Golden Grocery" has been gettting so many calls, it's because Oprah forgot to mention where to find the Golden Sweet Potatoes.
