Auburn barbershop helps clients sign up for health insurance

It's not where you would expect to learn about health insurance, but a barber shop in Auburn is taking an active role in making sure everyone gets covered under the Affordable Care Act.

Kevis Burnam at Nexxt Level barber and beauty shop in Auburn is taking an active role in getting his clients covered. He just recently signed up for health care coverage on the federal marketplace, and now that the deadline is right around the corner to get any kind of health insurance, or pay a penalty, he's working to make sure all of his clients are aware. He has even gone a step farther by hosting a group of volunteers from Bama Covered in his barber shop to walk some of his clients through the sign up process. He says this is his responsibility. He knows his shop often serves as his community's information hub.

"You know barber shops and salons to me are the original Facebook, the original Myspace," Burnam said. "Everybody's not familiar with the correct, proper terms, so when you got somebody that's educated in what they're doing, it makes it a lot easier."

Burnam is working again with the Bama Covered group, hoping to host another event before March 31 for volunteers to come in and walk people through the very detailed process of signing up.

Bama Covered is a group of volunteer college students from around the state who have all been trained to navigate through the marketplace, so they can answer questions and help the general public get enrolled. It's a non-partisan, non-profit group just working to help people.

Kevis Burnam was a member of the 2004 undefeated Auburn University football team. He doesn't make a big deal about his college football days only talking about it when someone asks. Some professional athletes are getting involved too in pushing people to get enrolled. A new campaign begins this week, coinciding with March Madness, featuring basketball players LeBron James, Magic Johnson, and Alonzo Mourning.
