KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

Roland Johnson joined the Marine Corps in 1963. After completing Officers Candidate School, Johnson was on his way to Vietnam as a Second Lieutenant.

On March 3, 1996 Johnson's life almost ended when his company was attacked by 2,000 Vietcong.

Johnson was wounded in the chest, but after his recovery in a naval hospital was sent back to Vietnam.

A Purple Heart, Navy Commendation Medal and Presidential Citation attest to Johnson's bravery in battle.
