Tyler Police, DPS stepping up DWI enforcement this weekend

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

With two holidays approaching, Tyler Police in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety will once again be stepping up patrols, making sure drunk drivers stay off the roads.

For many East Texans, Spring Break wraps up this weekend. That school holiday also collides with weekend St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Tyler Police said they received funding for the increased patrols through a state grant and will be placing more officers on the road beginning Friday and lasting through Sunday.

DPS had already increased its enforcement last Friday for Spring Break, adding that they will continue the program through next Friday.

Officials said last year’s enforcement period landed 1,000 drunk drivers behind bars across the state, with 226 of them as a direct result of the extra enforcement through the state grants.

But officers will not solely be on the lookout for drunk drivers.

During the same period last year, officers gave out more than 11,000 speeding tickets and 1,600 seat belt tickets, in addition to 12,000 miscellaneous citations.

Police said their ultimate goal is increasing presence to a point where drunk drivers never make the decision to get behind the wheel in the first place.
