ANDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The fate of more than a dozen dogs living in what police are calling deplorable conditions in Anderson County has been decided. At a hearing Wednesday morning, Terry Tawater and his ex-wife both appeared in front of a judge. Tawater, a former police officer, was arrested last week on animal cruelty charges.

Police say at least 15 dogs were living in a feces- and urine-covered home. When authorities entered the property, they also found the remains of several dead dogs.

The judge ordered all of the dogs be handed over to the Anderson County Humane Society where they will be available for adoption.

Both Tawater and his ex-wife must pay a total of $1,648.30 in fines. Tawater’s ex-wife could still face charges, too.

The judge said both parties knew the issues with the dogs in their home and neither took appropriate measures.

Tawater has 10 days to appeal this decision.
