Man accused of shooting wife opts for court appointed attorney

The man accused of fatally shooting his wife at their Smith County home appeared in court Tuesday morning.
Adrian Ray Mata, 29, of Tyler made his first court appearance since being indicted in the case. At the hearing, Adrian filed paperwork allowing the court to appoint an attorney for him. He had previously stated that he intended to retain his own attorney.
On February 25, the Smith County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting at Adrian Mata's home in the 1500 block of County Road 333. Upon arrival, deputies found 30-year-old Jennifer Mata, Adrian's wife, had been shot in the head. Jennifer was transported to East Texas Medical Center i Tyler, where she later died from her injuries.
Adrian left the scene of the shotting in a dark grey PT Cruiser. He was later located at a home on Serenity Way near Lake Palestine.
Adrian has been charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
