Northwestern State sophomore point guard Jalan West was chosen as the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week Sunday after his stellar play helped the Demons earn the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in this week's Southland Conference Tournament with two home court wins.

While NSU beat Central Arkansas 119-102 Thursday and Oral Roberts 88-82 Saturday, the 5-10 Bossier City-Bossier product averaged 22.5 points, 6.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and had a 12-3 ratio of assists to turnovers. He sank 60 percent (14-20) of his shots from the floor, including 67 percent (8-12) on 3-pointers, and drained all nine of his free throws. He has made his last 19 from the line and has raised his aim on free throws to 87.7 percent.
West tied the Demons' single-season steals record of 76, set in 1999-2000 by Richard Taylor. He hit all six of his 3-point tries and 9 of 10 shots overall Thursday night in a 26-point performance as NSU scored 72 second-half points against Central Arkansas.

The league office picked West for the award over other contenders, including freshman teammate Zeek Woodley. The Pelican All Saints High product, a 6-2 guard, averaged 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and hit 75 percent of his shots, including both 3-point tries, while sinking 8 of 10 at the free throw line and averaging 1.5 blocked shots in the two victories.
West and Woodley are among nominees for the All-Southland Conference Team which will be announced Monday morning. West, last year's Southland Freshman of the Year and an All-Defensive Team selection, is one of the top candidates for Player of the Year while Woodley is a strong candidate for this year's Freshman of the Year honor.

The Demons play Thursday at 5 in the Southland Tournament quarterfinals against the survivor of a Wednesday first-round matchup between eighth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana and No. 5 Nicholls State at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
