Red Raiders land 5-star quarterback commit

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Rated the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback prospect in the nation, Jarrett Stidham officially committed to Texas Tech Friday evening.

The Stephenville product announced plans to be a Red Raider on twitter, tweeting: "@Jarrett_Stidham: I have officially committed to be a Texas Tech Red Raider! #GunsUp"

Stidham will be joining Texas Tech as part of the class of 2015, so he won't be on the field for this coming season, but will be a Red Raider for the next one.

The Red Raiders won the recruiting battle for Stidham by beating out the likes of Alabama, Michigan, Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M and others.

College football evaluators are calling this the biggest Texas Tech recruit in more than a decade.

Stidham visited Texas Tech on Sunday and came away with glowing reviews, telling Rivals.com, "The actual visit was incredible, the whole experience was tremendous. It worked out great because I was the only player visiting and the coaches gave me the full tour. I had visited Tech and Lubbock before, but this visit was different. I got to spend a lot of one on one time with the coaches."

He especially enjoyed watching film with Coach Kingsbury.

"I watched the film of the Holiday Bowl with Coach Kingsbury and Coach (Eric) Morris," Stidham said. "They went over some of the plays, calls, the various formations and some of the reads. I would say watching film with Coach Kingsbury and getting to interact with him in the film room was one of my favorite parts of the visit."

Stidham is rated the No. 32 prospect in the country regardless of position. Last season the 6'2, 190 pounder passed for 2,687 yards and 30 touchdowns and also added 975 yards with 16 scores on the ground.

Previous to 2017, the Red Raiders hadn't experienced a perfect start in 14 years.  "We're definitely not finished, but it was relieving just to get through the preseason.
