Have you ever heard about oil pulling, or oil swishing?
It's an ancient Indian medical practice that seems to be making a comeback as a new health craze. It's also been making the social media rounds this week. Some say taking one tablespoon of sesame oil or pressed coconut oil and slowly swishing it in your mouth for 20 minutes could rid your mouth of toxins.
"Oils have a way of attracting the bacteria into the oil,"said Dr. David Nichols, a Tyler dentist.
Dental hygienist Lorrie Vest adds, "If you spit it out before the 15 to 20 minutes, the benefit is not there. It has to turn the creamy white consistency. That's the toxins coming out"
So what are these benefits?
The obvious benefit is better oral hygiene, but dental hygienist Lorrie Vest has researched it extensively and says that it can impact much more than that. "There are a lot of benefits for women: migraine headaches, hormonal balance. It is even said to cure chronic diseases," she says.
Perhaps the reason why this works is the power of the tongue.
Dr. Nichols explains. "It soaks in through the tongue. It actually gets into the lymph system. Now you are treating more than your gums. You are treating your whole body."
