ST. FRANCISVILLE, LA (WAFB) -

A firefighter and concerned citizen braved the icy waters of the "Gator pit" in St. Francisville to rescue a man trapped in his submerged pick-up truck. The gator pit is a small pond located just off Ferdinand Street on the East side of the town.

The truck ran off the road just after 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. The driver of the truck was identified as George Cathey Jr. according to West Feliciana Sheriff Austin Daniel.

Jerred Wunstel came upon the scene he said he saw cars lined up and down the road. He asked the people standing there if the man was out of the truck. When they told him he was still in the truck, he told them to get a boat that was in the back of a nearby truck.

"They went and grabbed it and threw it down the hill to us. I just jumped in and took off. I am not afraid of the water, it was cold," said Wunstel.

Wunstel and an unidentified firefighter got Cathey to safety. He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Wunstel says he was glad to help the trapped driver and adds the gators don't usually mess with him.

"Even when it's summer they didn't bother me. I've been in there with five big ones around me. 8, 10, 12 footers, and then again if you know me, it don't bother me," says Wunstel.

Wunstel says he spent a number of hours in the hospital Tuesday afternoon after pulling a muscle in his back helping out Cathey.
