Power crews working in a 'race with temperatures'

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

We have the power: That's what more East Texans are saying as the week progresses. SWEPCO has recruited out-of-town assistance from workers with the know-how and equipment to get everyone back in the 21st Century.

We talked to a crew from Louisiana. T & D solutions is in one of their bucket trucks. They've been contacted and contracted by SWEPCO to be part of their power army to get the lights and the heat back on. T & D sent Derek Bordelon, and a lot of others.

"There's several crews out here, basically just kind of working as much as we can through lunch and all that. We don't get too many breaks until everything's back on, you know?" Bordelon said. "That's it, pretty much. Until we feel it's unsafe, then we shut it down."

Derek says he's seen a lot worse than this.

"It looks just like minimum damage right here, so it shouldn't be too much longer before we get it back on in here," Bodelon observed.

They tag their work as they go so other crews know lines are already grounded.

"I see it coming on by late this afternoon." Bodelon said.

Derek spoke with Gail Davis who lives on George Richey Drive in Longview. She's been powerless since they got back from a Mardi Gras vacation.

"About an hour after getting home, it went out. It's good my husband had a generator, and we had a fireplace, but it's still pretty cold inside. We slept on the couch by the fireplace last night," Davis said.

Derek says they're in a cautious race with temperatures.

"It ain't too bad while it's kind of iced up. It's when it thaws out that it starts getting slippery, soft, hard to get the equipment in to the poles," Bordelon revealed.

Derek and his men have a lot of manpower on their side. It looks like this little battle with Jack Frost is almost over.

By 4 p.m., Bordelon and his crew had finished one trouble spot and moved on to another outage a few miles away.
