I-20 near Lindale a parking lot in winter ice storm

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Zachary Bynum says he's not used to chipping ice.

"Never really ran into anything like this before. I've been in dead stop traffic for like an hour or so, but last night was just ridiculous," Bynum said.

Despite years of driving interstates, he says he wasn't ready for the icy Interstate 20 terrain.

"At this exit ramp, I started to lose control on the ice, regained it, just pulled into the gas station and called it a night. I ended up staying In the cab of my truck here."

At this gas station? "Right here," he said.

And Zachary is not alone.

Joseph Stallone and his girlfriend spent the night in his truck.

"She slept there in the back. I slept there," he told us.

They say hotels were completely booked up.

"No chance. They didn't have any for 50 miles," Stallone said.

And traffic is moving slowly, if it moves at all.

"I probably went a half a mile in 3 hours," Bynum said.

"We only got about 5 miles in about 3 hours," Stallone told us.

In that time, Stallone says he passed at least 4 wrecks, 15 cars in ditches.

"Not on I-20. I've seen it pretty bad in the rain, but not near like it was last night and today," Stallone told us.

And he's just trying to get home to Carthage, a drive he makes often.

"Not on I-20. I've seen it pretty bad in the rain, but not near like it was last night and today."

Neither locals nor passersby expected all of this.

"I wasn't expecting it to be this bad. You know, kinda bad, maybe a wreck here or there, but not this bad," Stallone said.

Both say they'll keep chipping away...trying to get where they're going.
