EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

Many people traveling the East Texas highways were stopped by the ice that piled on to the roadways.

Several of those people were rescued from their icy cars by volunteer firefighters.

Red Springs firefighters tell us they've offered their own firehouse to those in need.

It happened fast for one family whose trip back home from Mardi Gras turned into anything but a party.

"It was around 10:30 and started driving slowly, and I thought 'next exit, let's get off and get a hotel..' And we never reached the next exit. Totally stopped. There were semis everywhere," said Shelly Wabrek.

Shelly and her two sons are trying to get back to the Dallas area, but were stopped in their tracks by the East Texas ice.

"We never moved again. It was 11 p.m. and the firemen picked us up at 5:30 this morning and we never moved again," she said.

Saved by Red Springs volunteers who took them and several others back to their fire station for shelter.

From there, the community stepped in.

"We got a lot of food together," said Pastor Collin Jones.

Jones says it's more than his church that has been stepping in to help out.

"Not just the people at our church; our community pulls together anytime we need anything," he said.

And the donations kept coming.

"I think it'll last them a couple of days if need be, and if that doesn't last, we'll get some more," he told us.

While parents wish the ice away, the kids made the most of it.
