The UT Tyler women's basketball team won its first ever ASC Tournament championship Sunday afternoon. The Patriots rallied from a four point halftime deficit to beat Mary Hardin-Baylor 68 to 56.
"It's an unbelievable feeling," said UT Tyler head coach Kevin Baker. I don't know that I've ever felt this as a coach before to watch a group of kids do something that's never been done a university before. It's something I'll always remember and it's something I hope these players will always remember too."
Junior Brittany King was named tournament MVP, scoring 21 points in the championship game.
"It's great to break history and make history," said King. "But it also feels good to set goals and actually accomplish them. I've never accomplished a goal in my life before and I finally have. I love the feeling."
With the win, the Patriots have earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division 3 Tournament.
"Today is magical," said UT Tyler senior Danai Woods. "You never would have thought. We said we wanted to be champions and every goal we've broke down has come to light. Making history, we did it."
