Extreme caution advised as winter weather moves into East Texas; roadways turning dangerous

Posted: Updated:
EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

Another blast of winter weather has moved into East Texas and is giving way to icy and slushy roadways across East Texas.

A strong cold front has moved through East Texas and behind that temperatures have dropped around 40 degrees. This has dropped almost all of East Texas below freezing. With temperatures dropping, the precipitation has changed from a cold rain to sleet and freezing rain.

Because of this, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Camp, Cass, Franklin, Gregg, Harrison, Marion, Morris, Smith, Titus, Upshur and Wood counties until Midnight. Also for Delta, Hopkins, Hunt and Kaufman counties until 9pm this evening. A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect for Cherokee, Nacogdoches, Panola, Rusk and Shelby until 6am Monday. Also for Henderson, Rains and Van Zandt until 9pm.

With a cold rain and sleet on the ground, roadways will be a big concern this evening as temperatures continue to drop. Temperatures at the surface have been above freezing for much of the day, but those will drop below freezing this evening. That's when the highest concern comes in as the sleet and rain on the ground could freeze over.

It is also expected to be a bone chilling night across East Texas. Temperatures will be dropping into the lower to middle 20s and with that many of us will see wind chills in the teens and a few locations could even see wind chills in the single digits. Because of that, a Wind Chill Advisory will be in effect for Henderson, Rains and Van Zandt counties from Midnight until 8am Monday. Also for Rusk and Cherokee counties from 9pm this evening until 7am Monday.

Along with the sleet and cold rain, there is also a lot of lightning and thunder across East Texas. This will continue through the evening hours as well. But by about midnight, all precip falling from the skies will move off to our east and our concern will shift solely to the roadways.

We will continue to track the storm and will have the very latest updates posted.
