A Gilmer man was killed early Friday in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 300 in Upshur County, just days before his wedding.
The Department of Public Safety says 27-year-old Justin Frost was traveling northbound on Highway 300 near Farm to Market Road 726 when his vehicle left the road, hitting a culvert. Frost was ejected from the vehicle, which continued traveling forward.
"It's very tough on the family, he was just a wonderful human being and a great young man with a bright future," says Billy Byrd, one of Frost's former baseball coaches.
Frost graduated from Gilmer High School and was very active in baseball.
Byrd says Frost touched the lives of many people during his years on the field, "He was the umpire that between innings would take a kid to the side and teach him and try to coach him and try to make him better."
He says hearing the news about Frost's death is tough because Frost was set to marry Kate Bailey, of Tyler, on Sunday at 5 p.m, according to the couple's wedding website, at First Presbyterian Church in Tyler.
"This was a moment that was supposed to be a celebration and it's turned into a tragedy," Byrd says.
It's clear the community of Gilmer is grieving, but Byrd says the beautiful memories he has of Justin make it a little easier to fight back the tears.
"His life was taken way too young but what a full life it was that he lived, and he'll be greatly missed."
Justin Frost's funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Gilmer.
