Investigators with the Livingston Police Department are looking into a fatal shooting incident that occurred Thursday night following an alleged armed robbery attempt. The alleged shooter told police that he acted in self defense.

According to a press release, the Livingston Police Department responded to the 300 block of North Jackson at approximately 7:40 p.m. in response to a 911 call about a robbery where shots had been fired.

When the Livingston Police officers arrived on the scene, they found a 26-year-old man lying on the ground with "what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds."

Through their preliminary investigation, the officers learned that a 48-year-old property owner was leaving a nearby office when he was approached by a subject who produced a weapon and demanded money.

"The property owner stated that he was able to obtain a weapon from his vehicle and fired multiple shots in self defense," the press release stated.

The 26-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Larry Whitworth. The body was sent off to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy.

Livingston Police officers secured the scene and collected evidence.

According to the press release, the Livingston Police Department is withholding the names of the two people involved pending notification of next of kin and completion of the investigation. The LPD is being assisted in the investigation by the Texas Rangers and the Polk County District Attorney's Office.
