"Its really fun to see the guys getting better," head coach Dr. Tom Volatile said. Tim Schmitt added, "We have come a long way, I mean this year we have already won more games than we have compared to last year."
From a Bishop TK Gorman based team to now having a squad with five different schools, and to beating teams they were embarrassed by last season. Yeah, things have changed.
"It's the best feeling in the world just being able to track our improvements by that much," Schmitt said. Trevor Carr added, "I just look at it like an opportunity to show how far we have come. I think its great for our team to be able to compete in those games where we didn't have much of a chance last year."
It wasn't long ago throwing and catching was like a foreign language, but a better skill set and understanding of lacrosse has made the Spartans competitive.
"We have a lot more lacrosse IQ, and just our knowledge of the game, it just tremendously has gotten a lot better," Schmitt said. Carr added, "It really shows the guys that have been working with their stick through the off season to get a lot better."
Success on the field has spilled over to several colleges becoming interested in the Spartans. Hard to believe for a group with just a year of experience.
"We have a lot of athleticism on our team, and colleges see that, " Schmitt said. "They recognize that and they know we will pick up the stick skills over the years." Carr added, "I think it has a lot to do with the athletic ability of playing other sports and the guys that are getting looked at definitely have put in a lot of time and effort."
And with half the season left to play, there is still time to keep improving.
