TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Wednesday, the Smith County Sheriff said Adrian Mata will likely not be charged with any more crimes.

He appeared before a judge on the murder charge and told a judge he would not like an attorney appointed to him. Court records show Mata intends to hire his own attorney.

Late Wednesday afternoon, a dark gray P.T. Cruiser was handed over to the sheriff's office. Authorities believe it is Adrian Mata's getaway vehicle used after the Tuesday murder of his wife, Jennifer.

"It was sitting at or near someone's residence in the City of Tyler and therefore the homeowner, as far as I know, is the one who had the vehicle towed," explained Sheriff Smith.

Smith says the vehicle had been abandoned shortly after the shooting. It was then towed and sitting in a wrecker lot. Now it's being combed through piece by piece.

"That's what our crime scene unit is doing at this time. Going through the vehicle after getting the search warrant... looking for any trance evidence or anything of evidentiary value to this case," said Smith.

The sheriff also says they're learning more about what led up to the murder. Three hours prior to the fatal shooting, multiple shots were fired outside of the Mata house on Poplar Road.

"There were several shots fired. That was not reported to law enforcement. We found out about that due to interviews upon arriving to the scene of the shooting" Smith said.

The sheriff's office is not releasing who was shooting at what or whom in that first incident.  However, they say they do believe Mata acted alone.

The sheriff said they retrieved a pistol when they arrested Mata. However, they are not saying if that gun is the murder weapon. It has been sent off to a Department of Pubic Safety crime lab.
