Auburn's Marta Sanz wins AllState Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate

Auburn's Marta Sanz carded a 4-under 68 in the final round of the AllState Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans giving her an 8-under 208 three-day total for her second career individual win. The Auburn women's golf team finished 9th as a team at the three-day tournament on Tuesday.

Hosted by Tulane, the AllState Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate was a 54-hole tournament that was played at the English Turn Golf & Country Club. The par-72 course played at 6,140 yards and Auburn was one of the 13 nationally-ranked teams playing in the 17-team fields.

"It was a good field and great tournament. We're off to decent start, but we are still not playing our best golf yet, but we are getting there," Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "Marta played well and just chipped away at the lead throughout the day. Her last putt was an eight-footer downhill to win and she knew she had to make it. That's what good players do in those situations."

Auburn shot 2-under 286 on the final day of action as team to secure ninth place with overall score of 9-over 873. No. 2 UCLA won the tournament with at 21-under 843 to best No. 1 USC by six strokes as the Trojans shot 15-under 849.

Sanz fired the second-lowest round of the day with a 4-under 68 secure the victory. The senior started the day in a tie for third, four shots back of the lead.

"The day held on fine. I started parring the first few holes, but I knew I had to get back a few shots and started birdying and played really well," Sanz said. "I hit some really good shots onto the greens which gave me some birdie opportunities, and the putting was on fire. I learned from (the course) every day and tried not to make the same mistakes from the second round yesterday to today. Today, it was just simple golf."

Clara Baena posted a three-day score of 1-over 217 to tie for 22nd overall as the freshman shot even-par 72 on Tuesday. Senior Diana Fernandez tied for 49th with a three-day total of 6-over 222 after finishing the final round with an even-par 72.

Alex Harrell tied for 70th overall carding a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish with 11-over 227. Jamie Yun was 81st at 15-over 231 and shot 4-over 76 on Tuesday.
