TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
A Tyler woman is dead and her husband in custody after a shooting on County Road 333 in Smith County on Tuesday.
The Smith County Sheriff's Department says Adrian Ray Mata, 29, of Tyler was arrested without incident at a residence just after 2:30 p.m. on Serenity Way near Lake Palestine off of Farm to Market Road 2661.
Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer John Moore says authorities responded to the 1500 block of CR 333 around 11:17 a.m. Tuesday morning where they found Jennifer Mata, 30, shot in the head. Jennifer was transported to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, where she died from her injuries just after 3 p.m Tuesday.
Adrian Mata left the scene of the shooting in a dark gray PT Cruiser. He was later located at the home on Serenity Way. The residence belonged to Adrian's boss, who he did drywall work for. The man, who did not want to be identified, said that Adrian trusted him. Numerous deputies in tactical gear surrounded the home after investigators received information that Mata was believed to be armed.
The crime scene on County Road 333 was completely blocked off with yellow tape as authorities processed the scene. Authorities say multiple rounds were fired at the scene, possibly from two separate incidents on Tuesday. Multiple evidence markers were placed around the area where authorities found shell casings.
"There were multiple rounds fired [at the scene]. I believe that we're going to find out that they were not all fired at 11:07, that there might have been an incident that happened here earlier today that went unreported," said Sheriff Larry Smith.
Don Martin with the Tyler Police Department said officers also investigated a house at Rusk Street and Vine Avenue in Tyler where they were searching for Mata, but he was not found at that location.
Jennifer Mata worked as a pharmacy tech at the University of Texas Health Center Northeast. She had been with the hospital for several years.
“We are very saddened to hear of the death of one of our UT Health Northeast family. Jennifer was a wonderful asset to our team and our hearts go out to her family,” said UT Health Executive Vice President Joe Woelkers in a statement on Tuesday.
The shooting remains under investigation.
Adrian Mata has been charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond has been set at $1 million.
