Rehnquist On The Sidelines

It's still not clear how long Chief Justice William Rehnquist's thyroid cancer will keep him sidelined.

The Supreme Court announced yesterday Rehnquist underwent a tracheotomy over the weekend.

One doctor says the type of treatment he received shows "an aggressive or complicated thyroid cancer." But, a cancer expert says the procedure, "may have been in anticipation of routine thyroid surgery."

Rehnquist's hospitalization put the court in the center of the presidential race. It's likely the next president will name one or more justices to the court which has been deeply divided recently.
