Residents prepare for the threat of flooding

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

As heavy rain hits the Tri-state Thursday, many residents prepared for the threat of flooding.

"Any heavy rain of any type, any potential flooding is cause for concern for any resident," said Covington resident Tom Bell.

Bell is no stranger to a flooded home. His home flooded last year. Bell says he prepped his home today knowing the consequences he could face.

"If it's a lot in a short period of time, there could be some problems," explains Bell.

There's still patches and even piles of snow in some neighborhoods. Bell says that leaves them even more vulnerable to flooding because the soil is harder than normal.

"It's just now beginning to melt. The ground is very saturated. With more rain, you could get some puddling at some low spots possibly and sewers could back up," says Tom Bell.

But severe weather in the region is bad news for Covington resident Darbra Fitzwater's flood-prone home.

"If it floods in the basement and we have a tornado warning, I don't know what we're going to do -Either stay upstairs or go swim," says Fitzwater.

However, there is someone reaping the benefits. John Winther says this is the busiest February and January he can remember.

"Typically we'll have one or two calls a day. We're seeing anywhere from 20 calls to 30 calls," said John Winther with Flood Restoration.

After Thursday's storm, Winther expects to receive even more calls, and some flood victims may have to add their wet, ruined possessions to this growing pile.

"We depend on the weather to act up from time to time and this is one of those times," explains Winther.

Winther says something to you can do to prevent flooding is check your sump pump. All you have to do is lift it up. If you hear the pump running, it's working.
