Woman with developmental disability helps homeless population

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas woman with a developmental disability is helping the homeless population one plastic bag at a time.  31-year-old Katy Hall has raised more than $3,000 to fill bags with necessities for the less fortunate in East Texas.

"Katy is making life better for a lot of people," Steve Ramsey, a church member, said.

Katy says her aunt has inspired her to help East Texans in need. She says she will never forget the time her aunt had sacks of food in her car for the homeless.

"She reached over behind her seat and then grabbed one of the bags," Katy said. "She actually handed the bag out to them."

Katy says that's what inspired her to start her project. This month, she reached out to her church members at The Church at Lake Cherokee for help.

"She literally went and aisle to aisle, pew to pew, with a one gallon plastic bag to collect the funds," Ramsey said. "This is where things happened in mysterious ways. We needed exactly $3,000; we collected $3,087."

Katy raised more than $3,000 in just one day. It was enough money to place food, hygiene products and money in these bags.

"I always wanted to help others in need," Katy said. "They need the support and help."

Steve Hull says he didn't know what was in store for his daughter 31 years ago when she survived open heart surgery.

"The thing I misunderstood completely and missed was that Katy would be the one to educate me, totally and fully, as to how people with disabilities live," Steve said.

Steve says there's one great thing about this whole project.

"I get to see somebody with a developmental disability like Katy out there giving to people who are in very difficult situations financially," Steve said.

Katy says she is an advocate for other people with disabilities and testifies at the capitol in Austin for house subcommittees.
