Jury hands down 16 year sentence for man who assaulted Rusk Co. officer

RUSK COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
A Rusk County man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for assaulting an Overton police officer.
On Thursday, the Rusk County District Attorney's Office announced that 40-year-old James Earl Piland was found guilty of assault on a public servant.
On April 21, 2013, Overton Police Department Officers Brad Loden and Marilyn Wilson were investigating a domestic disturbance call. Part of their investigation included questioning Piland. Both officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on Piland and reported that he was uncooperative. Their attempt to detain him for questioning resulted in Officer Loden being struck by Piland with a closed fist.
Piland has prior convictions of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and two prior convictions of driving while intoxicated. He also failed to complete an alcohol rehabilitation program.
