Magic Johnson discusses black history, health in the Queen City

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

One of the most recognizable faces in basketball stopped by the Queen City on Tuesday evening as part of Mercy Health's Black History celebration.

Hall of Famer Earvin ‘Magic' Johnson spoke on Tuesday at the Duke Energy Center, stressing the importance of black history and discussing at length his personal journey. Celebrating History While Making History is the second annual Black History Month celebration featuring the Laker great in Cincinnati.

Johnson stressed the importance of African Americans finding their own path.

"This is about all of you," said Johnson. "It's about all of you who have carved out, or will carve out, your own history – your own black history. You're going to do it in your own way."

Johnson also stressed the importance of education, particularly education of young teens. He discussed the importance of education in his upbringing.

"I knew it was cool to be smart," explains Johnson. "Sometimes in our community, people tell you a lie and give you false information. It is very cool to be smart."

From basketball star to chairman and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises, Johnson shared his success story. He says success started with a dream.

"I grew up poor, but didn't have poor dreams," said Johnson.

Health was also on Johnson's mind.

"When you think about high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, HIV, AIDS and heart disease – we as African American lead in all of those categories. We don't really have to if we go to the doctor and get our physicals, take care of ourselves and start eating right," he said.
